Given where we are, we believe it is more important to focus on supporting our students’ transition back to in-person learning, than to focus on assessments. That's why we will advocate for the U.S. Department of Education to make waivers available for spring 2021 assessments. 1/2

Just because some teachers would rather stay in the classroom than go into administration doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders. Many have amazing talents which can benefit a school by placing them in situations to use those talents. Honor their choice, dedication, & professionalism.

We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. And they get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests except for PISA in HS and they outperform us every time. If we can’t give students more movement, recess, and play time then we don’t understand education.

10 Things we should model in school/ life. Saying thank you. Not afraid to ask for help Admitting you don’t know something Respecting everyone Showing gratitude Appreciating others Offering help to others Intentional listening Saying I’m sorry when wrong Being kind What else?

Admin, when you observe a teacher, especially informally, don’t feel you have to critique EVERY time. Too often teachers are told, "you did great BUT", instead, " Leave the BUTS behind”. Let them know what they did well & move on. Leave them feeling validated & appreciated!

Teachers, the first few weeks of school can be overwhelming. It's not unprofessional or weak to be tired/cry, feel like you are running on empty, or just plain teacher tired. It is unprofessional for you to ignore it. Take care of yourself because you are a professional!

Ineffective leaders don't like strong staff because they can distinguish between confidence and competence. But this is why strong leaders actually like strong staff!

The research says people quit their bosses, not their job. While administrators may not fully grasp the magnitude of this, what if they saw their relationships with staff as important & possibly MORE important than teacher relationships with students.

Educators are not burning out because they need to do better at self-care. Educators are burning out because of how they are being treated, what is being expected of them, low levels of respect, etc. Maybe we wouldn't need as much self-care if we addressed the other issues.
