houston city council is having a ~dramatic one~ today, arguing over when to call an election for ballot propositions. 20,000+ houston voters signed petitions this summer to get 2 props on the ballot. mayor turner wants to wait until 2023. some councilmembers say that's too long.

Voter Suppression After weeks of statements speaking out against voter suppression, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner delayed the public from voting on the Houston Charter Amendment Petition Coalition petition which could limit his powers till the end of his term in 2023 That is voter suppression

@ogir Ryan lee EB Sylvester Turner Houston Charter Amendment Petition Coalition First, don’t insult me bc I signed the petition KNOWING exactly what it was.Secondly, this is a process used by the city to place items on a ballot.Thirdly, just bc the sitting MAYOR doesn’t agree with the items being petitioned should not equal a delay on Citizens VOTE.

✅City Council approved placing an important item on the November 7 ballot. Voters will decide whether the city should amend its charter to allow Council Members to place items on the weekly agenda. Currently, the charter gives the authority to the mayor only.
