Great to have over 100 Year 9 and 10s from around Victoria visit for a workshop as part of their week-long Science at Melbourne Science Experience Program. We had a good chat about the origin of Earth, life and of course... volcanoes... Before taking a closer look at some samples 🌏🌋🔬🪨💎
Made my national TV debut yesterday on ABC News Breakfast with Nate Byrne. We chatted all about the recent, and repeated, volcanic eruptions near Grindavík in Iceland 🌋 Thanks to Nate for having me and making it so fun! Had an amazing time teaching on Science at Melbourne's 'Tectonics and Geophysics' field course at Cape Conran. The rocks, weather and students were ALL great. We mapped rocks linked to the accretion of Australia's eastern margin; all very 'squished' as a result of prolonged tectonic forces!
HOT OFF THE PRESS: Rainforest response to glacial terminations before and after human arrival in Lutruwita (Tasmania) by Sarah Cooley Palawa burning kept Country open, suppressing rainforest expansion in what is supposedly a "wilderness" area today! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Good fun working on this paper with Josh Shea (Cambridge Earth Sciences), Anthony Lanati and Stephen Foley (Macquarie University School of Natural Sciences). A nice story on Jurassic volcanism showing that intraplate activity and metasomatism in Eastern Australia is not restricted to the Cenozoic🌋 OA🔓: doi.org/10.1080/081200…
Very proud of Saini Samim's first paper as part of her Science at Melbourne PhD! Saini (painstakingly) evaluated the best approach for LA-ICP-MS analyses of tiny volcanic glass fragments, demonstrating how useful this can be for fingerprinting eruptive layers🌋🔬 OA🔓doi.org/10.1016/j.chem…
Good to be back visiting a bunch of the junior classes at Siena College. As always we chatted all things volcanoes and diamonds 🌋💎Super impressed at the spicy questions the girls threw at me! I also tested out 3D printed slide viewers designed by Matthew Tarling - loved it!
How cool is the 44th International Symposium on Archeometry (ISA) taking place at the beautiful ‘autumnal’ campus of Science at Melbourne. Also just celebrating the fact that I was finally able to take a selfie with my amazing supervisory team at a conference! 😊 #ISA2024Melb #SciMelb
Proud supervisor! Saini Samim gave a brilliant talk at the ARCAS 42nd ISA on her Science at Melbourne PhD research unravelling the complexity of volcanism in the Turkana Basin🌋 P.s. I also enjoyed presenting a poster on our work applying Ar-Ar geochronology to archaeological problems
