Therapists trained within a system that perpetuates racist, ableist ideologies will reinforce these biases in their assessment practices

It’s important to remember that the current diagnostic criteria for autism describe distressed autistic people, yet it’s perfectly possible to be autistic & thrive.

Standardised assessments will always label a % of the population as failing or even disordered. Yet assessments like this assume there is a standard way of being a human. That's clearly absurd. It's society's push for order that causes disorder. Diversity is not something to fix.

It's the first day of Autism Acceptance Month So let's start the month off with this message! This also works the alternative way. If someone tells you their preference is "with autism," likewise don't refer to them as an "autistic person." How we identify is key 🔑 respect it

In that first tweet, I used the puzzle piece, described the ‘symptoms’ of autism and used person-first language. We LEARN!!! Let’s always remember some people are at the start of their journey of understanding and it can take time to learn! 💜

#WhitewashAutism unless you’re listening to, advocating for, and empowering the voices of Autistic people of all marginalised groups, you’re doing it wrong. We must acknowledge our privileges. I need to do better too as a white man, and it’s something I’ll keep working on.
