This will come as a surprise to literally nobody working in the HE sector.

Int student numbers are falling & further reforms (eg on the Graduate visa) would be an overcorrection with potentially devastating consequences for universities & students.

We've spent a fair bit of time recently talking about international students (see polling below!). Overwhelmingly: people are positive and think they're a good thing - as long as the system is fair in return to home students, and considerate of pressure on local infrastructure.

'The Graduate Visa isn’t a route to immigration, but it is an extension to students’ time in the UK.'

A v good article from Karen Holford CBE FREng which captures some of the facts often overlooked by politicians when discussing international students & migration.

What’s also quite odd about *only* allowing certain unis to recruit international students is that - if you are seriously concerned about the quality of teaching / research at said institutions - you are effectively saying you’re still happy for UK students to study there? Why?

If you slash international student visas you will a) slash export earnings b) slash income to towns & cities across the country which can ill afford to lose it and c) slash jobs and opportunities- already 50+ unis are making cuts to jobs and courses.

'However, with a crucial season conclusion ahead of us, we feel that now is the right time to make a change.'

Yes, perfectly normal and definitely 'the right time' to sack your manager...

International students bring so much to individual campuses and the UK as a whole

The Graduate visa is a hugely important part of the UK's attractiveness as a study destination

See why we're calling on politicians to commit to keeping the Grad visa👇

“We should be proud of the number of international students who chose to come here and study and celebrate the enormous contribution – economic, social, cultural – they make.”
