Canadian middle-distance star Marco Arop seeks 1st Grand Slam Track short distance title in Philadelphia this weekend The latest from Doug Harrison cbc.ca/sports/olympic…

Canadian runner Ben Flanagan tells CBC Sports he’s "progressing well" from a hip/quad muscle issue that forced him to miss the Ottawa 10K last weekend. He won last year's race in a national record 28 minutes 9 seconds. Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend Athletics Canada

Saturday's competition was won by Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, who lowered the Canadian mark to 28:06. "Can't say I’m shocked about the record going down," Flanagan says. "All those top guys were more than capable of getting it on the right day." CBC Sports Athletics Canada

The 30-year-old Flanagan became a first-time dad on March 29 "I got back into training soon after Nora was born and into a good groove. I knew Ottawa would be a tight window. I think I rushed my build up and unfortunately my body couldn't hold up." CBC Sports Athletics Canada

Flanagan is trying to be smart about returning to full training to avoid a setback as his top priority is being ready for a strong marathon debut in the fall. Last August, Flanagan competed at his 1st Olympics, racing on the track in the 5,000 metres. CBC Sports Athletics Canada
