I loved this book when I was a young teenager! Perhaps it is the reason why I keep so many diaries and journals myself?

I love to see public figures promoting the transformative power of reading.

Today would have been the birthday of polarising historical figure, Malcolm X. He was an American civil rights activist. He was best known for supporting black rights & the Nation of Islam. I read his autobiography at university, & he led a fascinating life!

It is Sherlock Holmes Day today! I’m celebrating by reading my favourite story, The Sign of Four, (again) and drinking even more tea. I love the boat chase at the end. All of the Sherlock Holmes stories are available for free online, and they are all worth a read!

Today, in 1897, the novel Dracula was first published. Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror vampire novel still influences writers (and audiences) even now. It’s a fascinating story to read, and now is the perfect time to read it, if you’ve always fancied trying it out!

I forgot to say, but yesterday was the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens. He is arguably the greatest novelist in the English language, and he wrote classic novels, such as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist.

Today, it is 19th June, also known as Juneteenth, which celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the USA. It commemorates the declaration of freedom for slaves in Texas in 1865, after the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.

Frank Herbert’s Dune series is one of my all-time favourite science-fiction reads. I have read most of the recommended books on this list, but there are also a few that are completely new to me, that I know I’ll be excited to read! 🤓 📚

In the USA, today it is National Tom Sawyer Day, which celebrates the fictional character from his most famous novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Why not try reading one of these classics of American literature during lockdown?
