Congrats to Vanuatu, Sweden & El Salvador for topping latest !
First developed at NEF in 2006 & published today by Hot or Cool Institute I think this is still a good of measuring the things that should matter (life exp x wellbeing/carbon footprint) happyplanetindex.org/countries/

NEW: the number of households threatened with homelessness & owed a prevention duty because of Section 21 is the highest on record (25,910 over the last year).🏡

Homelessness will continue to rise unless the Government strengthens the Renters (Reform) Bill to protect renters.📃

Ministers keep claiming they want a 'grown up' conversation about disability benefits while at the same time repeatedly and deliberately conflating PIP with not working when they know it's paid regardless of employment status.

Feigning ignorance - a classic of contemporary climate denial. For what it's worth: my house charges up its batteries with solar power, then discharges its own night-time power. I also have the option to force-charge my battery from the grid when power is plentiful.

This The New Statesman piece by Anoosh Chakelian covers work NEF is undertaking to explore alternative approaches to harsh & prescriptive benefits conditionality

Here's what we've found so far & why this issue is critical for any government serious about improving employment outcomes...🧵

“We need to be talking about the root causes of why we’re seeing this spike in poor health rather than blaming individuals or GPs for the process around it.”

Tom Pollard speaks to TalkTV about plans to take the power to sign people off work away from GPs

Last year NEF Sebastian Mang showed how the majority of the EU would not be able to meet climate targets under fiscal rules

Now after a year of fiscal reforms we look at this question again under new rules and considering social targets too EUROPEAN TRADE UNIONS

It hasn't got any better...📉

And workless households are also unlikely to be feckless / lazy, but instead sick, caring, being forced into insecure work that doesn’t match their skills or pay their bills etc

What do Gordon Brown, NEF and European Central Bank have in common? 🤔

We want to stop billions of public money going to the banking sector by tiering central bank reserves! 🏛

What does this mean, how does it work and why will our fiscal rules still hold us back?

‼️ Long thread incoming 🧵

Delighted to become a regular contributor to The New Statesman's Spotlight on Policy. My first piece is draws on work that Alex Chapman & colleagues have been doing on skills. If we want to reach net zero soon, the UK needs to start training its workers again!

Great to see Gordon Brown making the case not only for this government (or perhaps the next) to have a more central & explicit mission to tackle poverty, but to fund it in part through reducing what are effectively subsidies to banks, as advocated by NEF theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Thrilled that Gordon Brown has endorsed NEF's policy to reduce the stealth subsidies we pay to the banking sector for holding central bank reserves. On Peston THREAD>

Really significant that the Work & Pensions Select Committee has recommended today that benefit rates should be benchmarked against what households need to meet essential costs

Here's what I said when I gave evidence to their inquiry on behalf of NEF

With a stagnating economy and mortgage arrears on the rise, it is disappointing the Bank of England has decided not to lower interest rates to help the millions of people who are struggling to make ends meet. 1/3
