Meet Justin*. He came to us for help balancing his costs. He can’t work because of his health conditions and has applied for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - a benefit to help with extra living costs for disabled people. But Justin has been waiting months for a decision.

Wages rising 6% is good news, but will it make a difference for the 636,000 working households in a negative budget? 1 in 3 households in a negative budget include someone who’s in work. More than half these households include someone working full time. 🧵1/

Meet Samuel* - He came to us for help because he’s living in his car and can’t afford food. At the beginning of the year, he was living in a shared accommodation but his rent increased by 75% and he couldn’t afford to pay. He started building up rent arrears and was evicted.

#CostofLiving bound to come up during tonight's Sky News debate in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, with 62% of people in this constituency saying living standards will swing how they vote in this election 👇 #BattleForNo10 #LivingStandardsElection2024

Not surprising that the first audience question is about #LivingStandards. CitizensAdvice since Jan, we’ve helped 6000 people every day with a cost-of-living issue #BattleForNo10

Living standards is the number one issue for voters this election. But will the next government have a clear plan to tackle this? We'll be joined by Emma Revie, Chief Executive of @TrussellTrust at our next #CADataInsights event. Sign up to hear more ⬇️ eventbrite.co.uk/e/june-citizen…

Meet Paige* - she has recently fallen behind on her council tax (CT) payments. Even though she only owes £20, her local authority has taken court action to recover the debt, which will add an extra £45 to the amount she owes.

At the last 3 elections, our top advice issues CitizensAdvice were all about accessing benefits. Today, 2 of the top 3 are about the cost of living — energy problems, and food banks/emergency charitable support. Find out more: eventbrite.co.uk/e/june-citizen… #LivingStandardsElection

Good to see renters' rights back on the agenda today. CitizensAdvice has long called for a ban on Section 21 evictions and greater protections for renters. Sky high rents, poor conditions and the constant threat of eviction have long made renters' lives a misery (1/2)

Mark would like to pay off some of his debts, but being in a negative budget means he just can’t. This is further affecting his mental health as he’s just surviving, rather than living.

👇An excellent walk-through of the types of difficult decisions almost 5 million people in the country are having to make everyday while living in a negative budget (spoiler alert: there are no easy ways out)

Tess Thompson (@tessthompsonca) 's Twitter Profile Photo

5 million people are in a negative budget, where their income can’t cover their basic essentials. The new government needs to start work quickly on policies to pull people out of the red. Bringing these numbers down will be a measure of their success.

Today's the #KingsSpeech - and @citizensadvice we know the number one issue facing the people we help is living standards: paying the bills, making rent and putting food on the table. A few thoughts on what we're hoping to see from the new government..

Clare Moriarty (@claremoriarty) 's Twitter Profile Photo

In today’s #KingsSpeech the new government set out their priorities.  It’s good to see a focus on support for renters and a commitment to ending no-fault evictions. Likewise a promise to bring in the long-awaited employment rights bill 1/3

Out today: new report on the grim picture facing PRS renters ⚠️4.3 million are living with mould + damp, even in summer ⚠️1 in 3 have had to borrow to pay rent ⚠️3.9m who faced disrepair didn't complain. Almost half for fear of eviction or rent hike 👇

But while rents are going up, quality isn't Even in summer, 45% of renters are living in a home with mould, cold or damp - including 1.3 million children. Almost half (48%) have been facing issues for more than a year

🤮These horrendous horror stories show that the rental market urgently needs fixing Shocking that almost half of renters are living with mould, cold or damp, even in the summer. And people shouldn't feel afraid of being evicted for wanting to live in safe, slug-free conditions!

2 years ago we found that people of colour were paying £250 more for car insurance than white people. New research shows the gap has widened, and now stands at over £300. The FCA must act. Read our new report here: citizensadvice.org.uk/policy/publica…
