We are witnessing new waves of anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic hatred in Canada. The establishment media is haplessly playing along, facts be damned. A recent chemical attack on a Muslim ignored, while an Israeli soldier’s rampage against students in Toronto is glorified.

As someone who has been homeless 7 times over 23 years, I always think of those facing the rough streets, abusive or overfilled shelters or sleeping outside when the temperature drops, this country has enough to put a roof over everyone, we collectively choose not to.

“Doug Ford is making people homeless and making the rest of us deal with the consequences. Bill 60 should be called the ‘Create Encampments Faster’ Act,” said Encampment Justice Coalition organizer Diana Chan McNally. torontotoday.ca/local/politics…

How extraordinarily uninformed. The homelessness crisis arose as rents doubled this past decade and shelter allowances remained static. We defend many evictions. Almost all due to inability to pay the rent. We’ve never seen an eviction over drug use. But libeling victims, I

Homelessness will dramatically increase in Toronto over the winter, primarily because of provincial and federal funding cuts. Because of this, Toronto's Warming Centres will not be able to meet the need. My interview this morning with CBC Metro Morning. cbc.ca/listen/live-ra…

Toronto Council considers whether it can make life a little easier for more people in more places - a decision that can bridge generations and communities, instead of dividing them

Toronto Council meets today! Let's experience it together. Mayor Olivia Chow has set an item about rental protections as her first key matter, so that'll be considered first. After that: snow. It'll stream live here. I'll note what's notable. youtube.com/watch?v=6qGeIP…

Perks asks the City Solicitor if she sees any issues with Bradford's motion. She does! She says the motion may run afoul of rules preventing council from directing enforcement, and could be inconsistent with a court's ruling in Waterloo Region re: encampments.

I’m sitting in council chambers and it’s basically every legal and shelter expert telling Bradford it’s impossible to move 200 encampments in 48 hours from a practical or legal standpoint.

"Do we currently have enough space in our [shelter] system for everyone who is in an encampment to go?" Perks asks Shelters GM Gord Tanner. "No," says Tanner. "I think that's all I needed to hear," says Perks.

City staff are telling Councillor Bradford that a) they could not remove people from encampments within his targeted 48 hours and, even if they did, b) there is not enough shelter space for everyone. We must lead with compassion and care, not fear and stigma. #topoli

Kate Dupuis And the city solicitor refers to the Waterloo decision whem tje city has been evicting encampments since that decision... that needs some follow-up.

"We support housing for homeless people", they always say. "But there just hasn't been enough consultation about whether it should be in our back yard", they always say. "Just delay for a year or two", they always say. As years living in tents pass. cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…

Councillor Perks calls Bradford's speech "performative." "Isn't it interesting that the same person who gets up and thumps the table and talks about all the harms caused by people who have lost their homes, being in encampments, has voted against building shelters," Perks says.

Leigh Beadon (@leighbeadon) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Gord Perks does not hold back about Brad Bradford's unconscionable encampment motion and his transparent bid for attention (part 1/2) "Listening to Councillor Bradford I say: play the overture, raise the curtains, and turn on the lights."

i don't see why being offered the same shitty option a third time would change anything for a person who has set up a tent in a park

Doug Johnson Hatlem (@djjohnso) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We all know Paula Fletcher & Brad Bradford don’t care if they kill poor people (and their proposals will). Hundreds and hundreds are turned away from TO shelters every week. No solutions. Just more hatred and violence.

Diana Chan McNally (@diana_c_mcnally) 's Twitter Profile Photo

There is no "Three Strike Rule" on human rights, and I remind City Council that the provisions of the Waterloo ruling re: encampments don't extend to any offer of shelter - it must be *truly* accessible shelter.
