The headstone of Joseph Knight. The details about him and his family have been worn away and become difficult to read, but it keeps many interesting symbols on it. Anyone has an idea of what they mean? -Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh

The inscription has been damaged and hard to read but the design is one of the coolest I have ever seen. Skulls, Angels and some masonry symbol. -St Cuthbert’s Kirkyard, Edinburgh

Captain John Gray raised this gravestone as a memorial to his Parents, Thomas Gray & Elizabeth Wilkie. He chose to decorate the stone with a carved image of his 3 masted galleon. He also shows us his Mother, in a pretty bonnet, but not sure he liked his Father quite so much ;o)

Some gravestones seem designed to comfort the living with messages of a joyful & everlasting life after death. However this one seems intent on telling us that death is inevitable, scary, painful & permanent. Be afraid, be very afraid !

Spotted this discarded fragment of a broken gravestone today. Gave it a clean up to reveal a nice carving of a winged spirit above fruiting vines. Such vines were a popular image on 18thC gravestones in this area due to their association with Christ & the word of God.
