Students taught math by highly qualified teachers learn more: bit.ly/2xk4tHY. However, the effect is small. One standard deviation of teacher subject expertise increases student learning by two weeks per year. Subject expertise is only a small part of teacher quality

Success criteria isn’t eduspeak, it’s a strategy that we, as adults, use almost every day. Whether it’s buying a car or choosing the clothes to wear for the next day, we use success criteria to make decisions. Students need the same strategy to learn and grow.

Pretty excited to see Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale drop the SAT requirement for college applications. Many more effective and authentic ways to determine if a student is a good fit for a post-secondary program.

Quick tip on report card writing (‘tis the season!): Don’t reinvent the wheel when crafting meaningful comments; you likely already have what you need. Take the learning goals + success criteria already developed alongside self-assessment & your anecdotals and you are 90% there!

Doesn’t matter if you’re focusing on fundamental math, inquiry learning, guided problem solving or even worksheets. Now, more than ever, the importance of assessment FOR, AS, and OF learning are critical components in ensuring all students are successful in learning mathematics.

David Booth was the mentor everyone should be lucky enough to have. In my professional career, there was no one who inspired me more. His words of encouragement, wisdom and sense of humour guided me over the last 8 years and will continue to going forward. Thank you, David.

Reflecting on all that I learned from OISEUofT @ProfDavidBooth and there are many. One of my favourites: It doesn’t matter what gets a child to read as long as they’re reading. Even if it’s the back of a cereal box, encourage them and watch their love of reading grow.

Apologies for the lack of tweets, but my husband and I welcomed our first child a month ago and I’m on parental leave from EDU. I’ve been blogging about our journey here: gayswithkids.com/community/gran… and lots of Instagram posts @daddypapaandjasper More education posts next year!
