One of the most spectacular insects! Has the longest ovipositor known. Megarhyssa. Endoparasitoids of horntail wasps; egg is laid on larva that lives in wood using long tail. One is laying in vid! Like most insects doesn’t/can’t sting. My top 10 coolest insect, found in NY!

Saw a Hummingbird Clearwing on our hike today! However the Seek app has informed me it is actually a moth, Hemaris thysbe, of the Sphingidae (hawkmoth) family. Used to see these often in VA, thrilled to finally find my favorite insect in NY!

Bats & bugs, a dynamic duo of nature! 🐜 🦇 These amazing creatures rely on insects for their survival, & in return they keep insect populations (think NYC gnat swarm this summer!) in check. #ecosystem #NYCinsect #Pestmanagement

Very special find since the adult luna moth only lives about a week. It has no mouth (or digestive tract) and only lives to mate. 🌙👩‍❤️‍👨 #NYCinsects #NatureWonders

Check this 1940s relic! A berlese funnel made from an old pesticide can welded onto lead sheet metal. Thanks, @amnh for making our #entomology class also a history lesson!
