The return of SMERSH. Originally Death to Nazi spies in WWII but expanded to Death to Spies more generally - and anyone thought to have failed to be loyal.A soldier making a dismissive comment about Stalin in a letter would have SMERSH knocking at their door and a trip to a Gulag
