What an appalling card at Warwick Racecourse today. Good ground, very good course, poor prize money and hardly any runners. NH racing is in serious trouble, but the British Horseracing Authority continues to bury its head in the sand...

The first leg of the Autumn Double, The Cambridgeshire at Newmarket, was just one of many nightmares for punters on a day of huge fields across the country on Saturday 2 October 1999. Sandown and Redcar also raced on the flat, while Chepstow’s televised card, along with

Racing Mirror on Saturday 3 October 1981 covered a superb weekend including the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket and the Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Chepstow, Towcester and Kelso jumpers were also in action, as well as a flat card at Haydock. goingbehind.com/cambridgeshire…

Sixty years ago today a very competitive card at Nottingham was the principal meeting. Monday October 4th 1965 also featured a card from the late, lamented Wye National Hunt course. goingbehind.com/nottingham-wye…

Away for 2 weeks from tomorrow. The goingbehind.com website is set up to post daily racecards but there'll be no social media posts until I return.

Two weeks have flown by, but surprisingly when I checked the website stats, it's actually been busier without X links than with! Therefore I won't be posting daily links to the website, but it will still be updated daily. The Facebook group will remain. I actually hate X anyway!

Don’t be thinking that small fields over jumps are a new thing. Newbury, Sedgefield and Leicester cards from the Daily Mirror of Friday 24 November 1989 provide the evidence. goingbehind.com/newbury-sedgef…

Hennessy Day at Newbury on Saturday 25 November 1978. News and other cards from Wetherby and Wolverhampton in the racing pages of the Daily Express. Due to an industrial dispute there were no jockey declarations available. goingbehind.com/daily-express-…

Daily Mirror racing on Thursday 28 November 1974, and Red Rum is in the news. The racing that day was at Haydock, with Towcester and Wincanton also in action. goingbehind.com/daily-mirror-r…

Robbie Supple once again tried to emulate Keith Brown by making the start of a major race all about him, and ruining the day for the connections of some of the runners. It's hard to believe that he was once a jockey. Sophie Upton is the best starter. British Horseracing Authority take note! 😡

Idea: Nicky Henderson try rebuilding Constitution Hill's confidence by entering him in the Grand National. The Aintree Racecourse fences are the easiest hurdles in the UK. I wish I was being sarcastic, but I'm not. British Horseracing Authority are guilty of cultural vandalism. A disgrace!

I'd have L'homme Presse on my Grand National shortlist if the race hadn't been turned into a farce. That was a classic "good old fashioned" National trial. Impressive performance...

I feel sorry for the ITV Racing team for having to lie to the audience, saying how great the Saturday racing is gonna be. Truth is that the NH game is dying on its arse. Small fields, dominant trainers and constant NRs since 48hr declarations have made my favourite sport a joke.
