There's a teacher shortage coming. It's been coming for a while, but was staved off by the pandemic. Now, it's heaving back into view & it isn't pretty. It's easy to blame the DfE, but I think some other things are happening that matter outside of education too 🧵... STRAP IN!

At their peak there were around 3000 sure start centres - a one stop shop for under 5s and parents - more than a thousand were closed in post 2020 austerity - others folded into other services. Now we have long term Institute for Fiscal Studies research that they paid for themselves

The school pupil and workforce census figures released today are a shocking indictment of this Government’s record. More teachers are leaving the profession prior to retirement than ever before. And fewer newly qualified teachers are entering the profession, this year it dropped

Wow! This is a disaster for our schools - it is on this Government’s record. More teachers leaving BEFORE retirement than EVER before. #14YearsOfDecline

On Ofsted Bridget Phillipson confirms end of one/two word judgements and move to report card. She says as with any big reform has to be carefully done - with a way of flagging areas for improvement. I have heard the concerns but there needs to be a push to improve she adds

Visited my eldest and took her for a birthday lunch in Birmingham today. So hard saying goodbye, but proud to see how happy she is at uni.
