#onthisday in 1822 celebrations began in Edinburgh to welcome George IV, the first monarch to visit Scotland since Charles II’s coronation in 1651. King George was to have arrived on 14 August but torrential rain postponed it a day. (image from MS.23634)

200 years ago George IV became the first reigning British monarch to visit Scotland since 1650. Here's a painting by William Turner depicting the royal procession on Princes Street, Edinburgh in August, 1822, led by a cavalry band. Now held by Edinburgh Museums.
