It so nearly didn’t happen. The National Socialists seemed to be finished. How Hitler came to power in confusion and chaos, recounted in Timothy Ryback’s new book ‘Takeover’. My review in today’s Mail on Sunday Daily Mail Online
In this week’s The Spectator l’ve reviewed Charles Spencer Charles Spencer’s unforgettably horrifying book about his time at his prep school, Maidwell Hall. A dark decade, the 1970s

Ysenda MaxtoneGraham BBC Radio 3 Couldn't agree more. Simply don't know what to do with myself. No intellectual stimulation in this mush. And I like Tom Service!
Ysenda MaxtoneGraham BBC Radio 3 Trouble is the new Saturday morning schedule feels like just more of the same. Like In Tune but with Tom Service. Record Review was something very distinct and individual as well as sharpening the ears like few other things apart from, ironically, The Listening Service.
Well said! Saturday morning has featured Record Review for over 50 years, BBC Radio 3. It’s a little piece of vandalism.
How many of us are wishing with all our hearts that this was Record Review, not some weird replacement programme? Nothing else is as good on a Saturday morning, BBC Radio 3. Yes, I know it’s on Saturday afternoons now, but who’s going to be at home listening then?

Allison Pearson Ysenda MaxtoneGraham It will also decrease the opportunity for female singers, the sopranos, hugely. They only want to encourage a certain type of diversity apparently. It is cultural vandalism and should be stopped

Terrific piece by Ysenda MaxtoneGraham on the senseless disbanding of a brilliant Cambridge choir.
Gifted young singers don’t deserve this cultural vandalism & dumbing down.
Heather Hancock, Master of St John’s, has serious questions to answer.
What does the Culture Secretary think?…
