On this day in 1781, Maryland became the final state to ratify the Articles of Confederation. The Articles created a national government centered on the legislative branch, which was comprised of a single house, and established a "league of friendship" among the 13 states.

On this day in 1971, Apollo 14 returned to Earth after a nine day mission to the Moon. During the mission, Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell explored the Moon from the Lunar Module “Antares,” while Stuart Roosa orbited the Moon in the Command Module “Kitty Hawk.”
