The economic case for open borders and migration especially for an ageing island economy was always pretty solid. Few economists dispute it or ever did. The issue is management of communities, public goods and services, & integration. Thats where the discussion is.

Good for party propaganda, but given China’s large and rising trade surplus with Africa, and Chinese exports to Africa have risen twice as fast as African exports to China in relation to Af GDP, the tariff trumpet sounds hollow. Better to boost Ch imports from poor countries
