'Childhood is not a rehearsal. Young people are living their lives now, and who they become and what they do in the future has everything to do with what they experience in the present.' Kate Robinson Let the kids play.

And here he is warming up with our other freestylers last night. The first 10 mins of every class is led by the gymnasts: it's their club after all.

An example of variability and 'messy' learning. Boys using leapfrog to help their vaulting, they get good at straddle vault. Girls liked to try the through vault through repetition. Their choice, all worked hard, at their pace.

A lot can be accomplished in a short space in a brief time. Yet footballers still seem to spend large parts of preseason jogging round the pitch or on a beach: they are practicing getting slower. I try to get footballers faster and more agile: they can impact the game more.

Lots more examples and progressions in the 'Do the locomotor' workshop next week. None of this is random: it's structured, progressive and varied. excelsiorgroup.co.uk/coaching-cours…

Great session at Royal Wootton Bassett RFC this morning. Moved indoors due to the heat. Working on speed off the ground and introduction to grappling/wrestling/evasion from contact. Big Jake got faster.

We did a quick feedback session with our young gymnasts last week. They write two things anonymously: What they like doing What they want more of. The word cloud is from the younger ones. This will help us plan for the next term. #turnupstandtalltryhard

Tons of takeaways in this excellent book. Lederman always has clear models and examples. Functional means the patient's world rather than 'extra-functional' clinical exercises that are forgotten. Adding this to my 'recommended' list. #amreading

A hot afternoon on Tuesday so I let the young gymnasts carry on their individual practice for longer. They designed this activity. The best bit is how they adjust the mat for the next person. #turnupstandtalltryhard #athleticdevelopment

I had a discussion about this with two people this week. When I wrote to Neil Parish MP 13 years' ago asking for more funding for local parks he dismissed the idea because the Olympics would fix everything! theguardian.com/sport/2022/jul…
