🚨🧵1/ I have identified around 1900 Twitter/X bots #greenwashing COP28. They are part of a much larger bot network, likely connected to the UAE or a UAE-aligned entity. They post on issues ranging from Sudan to Mauritania. I will focus on #COP28 here though > #disinformation

3/ If we zoom in we can see this relationship. On the left, you have a tweet by 'general' mazon_elhosy extolling the virtues of #Cop28UAE. Circled you can see 109 likes. On the right is the network graphic showing Mazon_elhosny's tweet being liked by 'minions'.

6/ What's clever(ish) about the network. The bots don't all retweet each general 1900 times. They're divided into units/cells - and each unit will like a tweet by a specific general, with a few exceptions. Presumably this is to avoid detection by Twitter/X.

10/ So the TLDR: At least 1900 unique bots/fake accounts are involved in promoting #COP28 greenwashing, mostly in English and Arabic. The bots are connected to a much larger network of fake accounts numbering at least 7000, seemingly aligned with UAE foreign policy
