Tired is the sensitive soul who wants others to see the truth, when the others demand their silence.

Stop beating yourself up for the decisions you made when you were trying to find a way out. Anything can look like a solution when you’re in survival mode.

So this is something I wasn’t expecting to have to tweet out, but I’ve tried many different avenues and gotten nothing but dead ends, so here goes: I’m a survivor of clergy abuse. I reported the clergy member to their governing body back in January 2022.

One of the harshest realities of sexual abuse is wanting to be known, but wanting your body hidden. Abuse makes a body the crime scene & we can’t escape it. We also can’t escape the desire to be known. Healing is in respecting your boundaries & needs. Safe people will get that.

I’d prefer that Bishop Rick Stika of Knoxville be REMOVED. But his being allowed to resign or retire at least takes him out of a position in which he poses a threat to Catholic children. And not just Catholics. And not just children.

Not enough. But a start.

Abusers push you to share things you don’t feel comfortable sharing. They poke at your vulnerability & suggest you’re not believed, so you’ll share more to escape feeling misunderstood. Then, they use that info to harm you. Anytime you feel provoked: pause, observe, exit.

Pondering a beloved FUS campus friar that I trusted and respected deeply. I always wondered if I had chosen to tell him, surely it would have been better. I found out he already knew and said nothing. It broke me. He knew. The whole time. And said nothing.

Had a dream that I went back to FUS for another degree. Lived on campus in a new dorm. Saw Pivonka and told him I was there to keep an eye on the friars. Woke up chuckling at myself.

Peace to those who grew up being forced to apologize when they knew they had done nothing wrong. You knew the fake apology was a detour from unjust punishment. Heartbreaking, yes. But you did the right thing. I hope you are safe now.
