There’s nothing wrong with advocating for your needs 💜 🤝 We all need a bit of extra support from time to time. But when society is fundamentally inaccessible, disabled people might need a greater level of support.

Today Government has launched a new disability awareness campaign. The Ask, Don't Assume campaign is an attempt to divert attention from the real issues & barriers faced by disabled people. It also ignores the Government's role in creating negative attitudes about disability 1/

#AskDontAssume. Well-meaning, but not thought through. As a disabled person, I receive emails like this weekly, from strangers asking me to share deeply personal and often traumatic experiences. Campaigns like this fuel the entitlement - we are not exhibits in a zoo.

One of the problems with #AskDontAssume is the campaign doesn't give advice about how to offer support beyond "asking". So if you encounter a disabled person living their life & you think support is needed what should you do? First reflect on whether you need to do anything 🧵
