One of the most misleading things about learning mathematics is that you are seeing the *output* of a great deal of trial, error, sweat, and tears, presented as if it’s obvious, or at best a product of cleverness.

Abstractions are important, but hard to get right. Consider mathematics: it took 2000+ years from discovery of negative numbers to introduction of the abstract concept of group. That's the kind of timeline I'd like to see in my software projects.
