#WhyIDidntReport a thread: I didn’t report the first time because the incident, in my opinion, wasn’t as violent as I heard sexual assault is. I thought it didn’t matter because he was my boyfriend and he was drunk and I didn’t want to ruin his military career.

2. My mom didn’t know I was sexually active. Who could I tell? Maybe it wasn’t as bad as I had thought? But I felt abused, physically and mentally. But what about his career? I put how I felt aside and I suffered for years. #WhyIDidntReport

3. The second time I didn’t report, I was on active duty at XVIII ABN Corps, Rear D in the JAG office. 20 years old, constantly questioning authority, and by all definitions, a problem soldier to most of my superiors. #WhyIDidntReport

4. Almost as soon as I reported to the unit, the acting 1st SGT singled me out. He would ask me to come to his office and ask me questions because he was “getting to know all of his soldiers.” After talking to other young soldiers, I found out I was the only one #WhyIDidntReport

4. Soon I started getting phone calls and text messages during off hours. He would insist that nobody could know he was texting me. Things became very awkward for me when he was around the office but what could I say? He outranked me. #WhyIDidntReport

5. Towards the middle of the tour, the first sergeant’s right hand started asking me when we were all going to hang out. I told him he was married and should leave me alone, and he said he didn’t care. He was an E7, I was an E4. I still I couldn’t say anything #WhyIDidntReport

6. A few days before the tour ended, I found out that the 1st SGT had told his entire staff team that I had invited him to my apt mult. times, that he got me drunk, and did questionable things with me. #WhyIDidntReport

Alexis Frank (@frank4congress) 's Twitter Profile Photo

7. None of that ever happened and some of the staff apologized profusely for believing him and admitted that’s why they never took me seriously as a Soldier, and why more of them felt the urge to harass me #WhyIDidntReport

8. It’s been years and only one friend, and my husband know what I went through that year. Constantly avoiding company events and never speaking up about being harassed in the fear that I would never be believed. I don’t even remember his name #WhyIDidntReport

Alexis Frank (@frank4congress) 's Twitter Profile Photo

9. I kept the text messages, and the old cellphone just in case one day I would be brave enough to tell my side of the story. Because at 20 years old, I didn’t want to cause anymore problems than people made me believe I had already caused #WhyIDidntReport

From health care to economic justice to civil rights, the Democratic agenda stands in powerful contrast to President Trump’s broken promises to American families. Deeply honored to be chosen to deliver the response to the State of the Union next week. Stay tuned for updates!
