By definition, manufacturing is in a #recession here in the United States ... but it's very mild, says Taylor St. Germain of ITR Economics® as he kicks off the opening general session at NAHAD 2024.

From St Germain: if you look at global GDP, the U.S. still comes in at number 1, at 26%. The U.S. is further distancing itself from number 2, China. He adds that pending some major disaster, they do not foresee anyone in the room living to see China surpass us. NAHAD

St. Germain says that that nationalism is the long term play, with supply chains coming back on shore. This is generally a good thing for the state of the US manufacturing. But it means prepare yourself for more tariffs or protectionist policies. NAHAD Paul J. Heney

St. Germain points out that wages being up during a time when the economy's weak is unusual. And that's because of how tight this labor market that we're dealing with. We need to embrace ##AI, #, automation, innovation. We need to make the labor force more efficient. NAHAD

We're still spending money (led by high-income earners). 2/3 of GDP growth is consumer spending in the U.S. When media says that consumer spending is down that's misleading. Spending peaked w/ stimulus money but the chart shows continued normal growth over the years. NAHAD

Just wow. The average mortgage payment in the United States that we sit here today, it's $2,356. That is double what it was three years ago. That's concerning. And that's what happens when the Federal Reserve raises rates in a way that they have, said St Germain NAHAD

Despite projected decline in commercial construction, we should be excited about the future. U.S. mfg. construction is behaving differently from other commercial construction datasets at a record high growth rate of 64%, resulting from on-shoring and reshoring that's coming back.
