Contrary to what the 5e encounter guidelines would suggest, a monster of a given CR should be expected to be weaker than a PC of a level equal to that CR. Four CR 5 enemies versus four level 5 PCs = the PCs win. This assumes the PCs have at least somewhat decent builds.
