I am delighted to see this morning that the inspirational Chris Green has received an OBE for services to the railway. A man who possesses equal grasp of vision and detail and is generous of his time with others. We are going to need a new nameplate for our NSE special train❤️👇

This #WorldRefillDay we’re calling on sports clubs, players, supporters and venues to help reduce the use of single-use plastic on and around our fields🥤 Pledge an action and you could be in with a chance of winning your club team-branded water bottles: shorturl.at/nqKUB

When HS2 started I decided to let others cover it for Modern Railways . This was because I realised that reporting on such a major scheme at the level readers expected would restrict my time available for coverage of the working railway. A prudent decision in retrospect.

I was working in the quite exquisite surrounds of Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens today. A real treat. This is somewhere that everyone should visit at least thrice. Such gilt-edged opportunities don’t come along often & so I came prepared with 3 camera/lens combos. Here’s No1. Hope they pass muster

The German road innovation uses porous granite and a hidden drainage system to absorb up to 4 tons of water per minute, a design proven effective in flood-prone areas

A source reminds me that this scheme is vital if there’s to be any hope of restoring the second hourly Newcastle-Manchester service. That service is something Northern politicians only grudgingly gave up to let more East Coast Main Line trains serve London.

The bare, bare, oh so bare & treeless palimpsest expanses of Upper Coquetdale in Northumberland. No one will ever convince me this is the most environmentally-productive form of land management. Admittedly the resident ovines may well beg to differ (:

Some depressing reading from ORR: 'Reduced renewals delivery plans risks additional deterioration of railway assets which may lead to more asset failures and therefore disruption to train' orr.gov.uk/annual-assessm…

It’s unusual to have a “do not travel” instruction, but there’s really no excuse for this on the railway: signal failure closes platforms 1-14 at Waterloo bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
