'China’s quiet energy revolution: The switch from nuclear to renewable energy.'

China scales back its nuclear plans for the same reasons as everyone else. It's too expensive and too slow. It can't compete with renewables. reneweconomy.com.au/chinas-quiet-e…

Actually the most insidious form of denial is to claim that we can’t transform our economy and use an example (like cobalt for EV batteries) that was solved 5 years ago (with LFP).

Thread: Each week I run a simulation of Australia’s main electricity grid using rescaled generation data to show that it can get very close to 100% renewable electricity with just 5 hrs of storage (24 GW / 120 GWh)
Results:
last week: 99.4% RE
last 139 weeks: 99.1% RE (1/5)

China power generating capacity additions in Jan-Mar 2024:
solar 45.7 GW (vs 33.7 GW in 2023)
wind 15.5 GW (10.4)
thermal 6.4 GW (8.1)
hydro 1.8 GW (2.7)
nuclear 0 GW (1.2)

Last year, almost 300 GW wind&solar was added and now the first months are up 40%!

I translated this post and sent it to a friend here in China working at a company that builds industrial rooftop solar projects.

His reactions were interesting and illuminating as to the relative market state of solar power installations in the USA vs. China here in 2024...

Big news from China today and a tipping point - NEV penetration rate has broken 50% which means that they sell more NEVs in China than ICE cars. (Includes hybrids) (Pictured celebrating below)

Good summary! Add in Prof Bent Flyberg 'How Big Things Get Done ' of fat tailed risks of 1.0 for solar and >2 for nuclear. Dr Paul Dorfman Mark Nelson Will Shackel.
It's not anti-nuclear class war. It's pragmatic.
Better outcome. Less emissions, faster, cheaper.

I can't claim to understand some (most) of the chemistry going on here, but what I can grasp is the numbers.

Holy moly.

When you get a bit down on the energy transition progress, stuff like this is a bit of a pick-me-up.

If you don’t think electricity is a commodity, you haven’t been paying attention. Funny though, it’s the thermal generators making the grid fragile though, how does that fit with the narrative?

Renewable critics declare that the “worst ever” week for output over the past seven days is proof that renewables won’t work. But modelling shows that is not true ow.ly/YcvG50RhNns
