I’ll never understand how, to buy a shared ownership property your income has to be below a set amount and you have to pass affordability checks.

But once in, they can ask for an extra £1,000 a month in service charges.

Shared ownership is not affordable housing and is a con.

Just got off a call with the Leasehold Advisory Service - they told me that they’d never heard of the ‘1% of property value’ service charge rule for lenders. How are people supposed to move forward/on when there’s so much inconsistency?

Outrageous payments for little to no service?

But if you refuse to pay you face forfeiture!

Just one piece of the failing leasehold legislation.

Thank you to @anoosh_c and Rachel Cunliffe for having me on the The New Statesman podcast to chat about all things leasehold.…

New service charge has come through - £262pcm (£3144p/a). Flat is probably worth £280k or thereabouts - we’re over the 1% threshold lenders are often asking for. Could we drop the asking price and absorb the cost? Desperate to get out now.

Thanks to your comments, I’ve drafted a list of the people who should be called up for Britain’s civilian military duty first.

1. Women in their 40s/ 50s - furious, absolutely sick of everyone & everything, used to surviving in harsh conditions - i.e. their own bodies

'Watch out for freeholders’ making hurried offers to extend your lease for a lump sum, it could be a last-ditch bid to earn cash before the reforms kill off their income stream' says sebastian o'kelly

🚨 Some housing associations are doing exactly that.

I still know so many people who still have unaffordable unknown costs hanging over them and/or waiting for remedial works to be done.

So many people still unable to move on with their lives because of years of incompetence on the part of building owners, developers and govt.

Does anyone have a link to a decent article on expenses leaseholders can expect to pay due to the Building Safety Act 2023? I’m talking maintenance/service charge costs rather than initial remediation. I’ve trawled the internet and found (un)surprisingly little…
