.Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II also spoke during #GrantsPassvJohnson . While we know homelessness disproportionately impacts #BIPOC communities but it also affects more poor White people in terms of raw numbers. Like #COVID19 , the scourge of homelessness is indiscriminate. The solution is housing.
#GrantsPassvJohnson oral arguments may be over but the work doesn't stop in locally. Tomorrow, I'm joining the Miami Coalition to Advance Racial Equity, et al. to demonstrate why criminalizing the over 30K Floridians who can't afford housing is cruel/ineffective/expensive. We need #HomesNotHarm .
The inscription on SCOTUS reads 'Equal Justice Under Law' but #GrantsPassvJohnson will test that notion.
Helen, a Grants Pass resident, is among the working poor who is part of the unhoused population. Her story is why Florida Justice Institute & 1,000+ entities believe in #HousingNotHandcuffs .
Since it's national #SecondChanceMonth , I also connected with fellow Univ. of Arizona Law grad, Jonay Foster Holkins, of Business Roundtable's Second Chance Business Coalition while in D.C. BRT understands that meaningful #CJReform is a moral and an economic imperative.
Thanks to my counterparts from National Homelessness Law Center, Antonia Fasanelli, + End Homelessness, Ann Marie Oliva for joining in the fight for basic humanity during #GrantsPassvJohnson oral arguments at SCOTUS. Florida Justice Institute also believes in #HousingNotHandcuffs . (2/2)
🧵 (1/2) This time tomorrow, the Supreme Court of the United States will hear #GrantsPassvJohnson . In #Florida , over 30,000 souls experienced homelessness last year. Over 650,000 in the United States experience it on any given night. [via National Homelessness Law Center]
.Vox's Rachel Cohen: criminalization 'can exacerbate an unhoused person's already precarious financial situation and prolong their homelessness.' Homelessness is a housing issue and Florida Justice Institute will work to protect these vulnerable populations. (2/2) twitter.com/voxdotcom/stat…
In two days, the Supreme Court of the United States hears #GrantsPassvJohnson . Read this explainer about why Florida Justice Institute, Miami Coalition to Advance Racial Equity, Southern Poverty Law Center, and over 1000 other entities are fighting for already vulnerable populations.
We're just days away from SCOTUS listening to oral arguments in #GrantsPassvJohnson . Read up on the brief Florida Justice Institute joined that our partners at Southern Poverty Law Center submitted to the Court. I've known National Homelessness Law Center's Will Knight since my #CJReform efforts in Phoenix. In today's Bloomberg Law, he alluded to the #Pottinger case that Florida Justice Institute attorneys earned: 'A federal ruling prohibited use of jail cells and fines as a response to homelessness in Miami from 1998 to 2019.'
If SCOTUS rules in favor of Grants Pass, that will only get worse. Florida Justice Institute is proud to join our peers from around the U.S. to call for the end of this escalation in the criminalization of poverty. Homelessness is a housing issue. At today's legislative recap with UnitedWayMiami, I spoke with Sen. Alexis Calatayud, Rep. Kevin D. Chambliss, & Rep. Vicki Lopez about Florida Justice Institute's efforts in criminal justice reform and ending the criminalization of homelessness. Looking forward to working with them next session.
ICYMI: Florida Justice Institute signed onto the amicus brief submitted by Southern Poverty Law Center & joined others around the country to say the scheme peddled by the Cicero Institute is ineffective, cruel, + far more costly than investments in housing. johnsonvgrantspass.com/amici (via National Homelessness Law Center)
