This is great short video that will help forest professionals conserve denning habitat for black bears in their operations in coastal forests.

Retaining effective bear dens in the working forest is easy to achieve WITHOUT affecting timber supply. Every cutblock on Crown land in BC is required by law to have 3.5 to 7% of its area preserved as Wildlife Tree Retention Areas. Make bear dens the anchor of the WTRA. Easy!

Fisher populations are declining in central BC Canada due to habitat loss and accelerated by trapping bycatch mortality. Our study suggests that unless bycatch is eliminated, fishers will become extirpated from central BC within 2 decades. bit.ly/esr_49_1

How different are the 2 fisher populations in BC? We followed 100 radio-tagged fishers to see. Survival wasn’t different, but reproduction was much lower in the Columbian pop. This resulted in a declining Columbian and a stable to increasing Boreal pop. wildlife.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jw…

Back to the drawing board! A trial which installed nest boxes for fishers in Minnesota has found that whilst fishers investigated the boxes, they failed to use them for breeding, as hoped. Similar boxes have proved popular with pine martens in Europe. timberjay.com/stories/study-…
