Doubling magistrates’ sentencing powers risks hurting rather than helping the courts backlog and prison overcrowding crisis, leaving victims waiting months and years for resolution. It also risks worsening structural injustices. Here’s why: (1/6)

We found other serious issues with magistrates’ courts’ remand decision-making, including failing to properly follow the law & an overuse of prison stays. The govt mustn’t boost magistrates’ sentencing powers unless sure their sentencing decisions don’t have similar issues. (5/6)

All in all, the government should think again. Getting rid of ineffective short prison stays is one far better way to solve the overcrowding crisis, as is doubling down on housing, healthcare, and jobs as a way to build safer and healthier communities for us all. (6/6)
