Part of being Autistic and ADHD, for me, is my body involuntarily rejecting anything I dislike, whether it be: a food, task, job, relationship or something else. When this happens, I feel physical symptoms, such as nausea, pain, anxiety and lightheadedness, which can’t be fought.

When you’re autistic, choosing what to say to others can take a lot of mental arithmetic. You want to communicate in a way you understand, but: you know your brain works differently to most people’s; you need them to understand you; and you can’t rely on them meeting you halfway.

To bridge the gap, you must plan what you want to say, accurately preempt what they’ll read into that, and then tweak it until you have enough to help them read the right things into what you say, but not so much that they read even more into what you say and become offended.

In essence, in the majority of situations, the responsibility of overcoming The Double Empathy Problem rests solely on your shoulders, you know this to be the case, and to have a reasonable conversation you must play chess with yourself every time you plan to say something.
