This week, on #WorldWaterDay, I had the privilege of joining a youth-led agritech enterprise, Eza Neza from Rwanda Youth In Agribusiness Forum and FAO in Rwanda, for the first successful harvesting of fruits and vegetables at the inaugural urban vertical and hydroponic farm in Kigali, Rwanda.

Furthermore, urban farming significantly contributes to enhanced food security by offering an affordable, health-conscious, and efficient approach to land utilization, while simultaneously preserving green spaces within our communities.

I look forward to the expansion of this initiative across different parts of Kigali City as we envision a future where urban farming will become a cornerstone of community resilience and sustainable development through agrifood system transformation.

Did you know that over half of the world’s population now lives in cities? With that number expected to rise to 68% by 2050, urban farming will become a solution to food system transformation across all cities. I’m going to share the benefits of urban and vertical farming

Urban farming and vertical farming offer several benefits for urban communities and the environment, such as 1. Promotion of food security through local food production, reducing reliance on imported produce and ensuring access to fresh, nutritious food for urban populations.

3. Green spaces are created within cities by vertical farms and urban farms, improving air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and providing recreational areas for residents.

4. Economic opportunities are generated by urban farming initiatives by creating jobs and supporting local economies, particularly in underserved communities where access to fresh food and employment opportunities may be limited.

I would like to challenge Ministry of Agriculture & Animal Resources |Rwanda, Green City Kigali, UNICEF Rwanda, UNDP Rwanda, City of Kigali, Rwanda Environment Management Authority, Ministry of Environment - Rwanda, and other stakeholders to try this urban farming and greenery solution. This involves increasing investment in green infrastructure projects to mitigate
