The political declaration is a vital milestone: the first international recognition of the harm caused by #EWIPA . INEW calls on States to use the United Nations Security Council debate to express support for the declaration, its endorsement and implementation.

The recent United Nations #POC report notes that in 2022, 2,399 incidents involving the use of #explosiveweapons in populated areas were recorded in 17 countries and territories affected by conflict, resulting in 18,163 victims.

❗️❗️❗️Of these, nearly 94% were civilians.

Joining the political declaration is a recognition of a grave humanitarian problem from #EWIPA . It is an expression of solidarity with those affected & a commitment to take further action to strengthen the protection of civilians both during and after armed conflict.

83 States endorsed the #EWIPA declaration in November last year noting that it marked the first milestone in a long journey ahead, a starting point—not an end point & stressed the need to increase the number of states endorsing the declaration.

In a recent United Nations report, UNSG António Guterres calls on states to join the declaration to protect civilians from #explosiveweapons in populated areas “without delay and translate its commitments into meaningful action”.
