Just saw a bestselling self-help author argue that it’s “privileged” to expect authors to have time to read books. One of the many reasons I despise the self-help genre is because these books are often written by people who have no knowledge of fiction, poetry, myth, wisdom.

My childhood was desperately poor, but that didn’t stop me from reading and loving Jules Verne, Lewis Carroll, Dickens, Shakespeare, Daphne DuMaurier, the Brontë sisters. We make time for the things that we love. Reading is not a “privilege,” it’s a human right.

I feel sorry for these guys who are always posting, like, “AI video of Pikachu vs. the Balrog” and if you quiz them they have never read a Shakespeare play, never read a poem, can’t name a film made before 1980. No taste, no curiosity, joyless & vulgar, they are hollow men.
