Economics is uniquely insular and inward-looking. All disciplines lean toward citing their own work, but economics does so far more: 81% of its citations are within-field, compared with just 52% in sociology, 53% in anthropology, and 59% in political science.

Thanks for the endorsement Ricardo Reis … Where we differ is over the view of progress in science, and economic science in particular, as a linear progression that makes progress towards ‘truth’. It is better characterized as a tree in which often, we move along the wrong

.Jon Steinsson raises an interesting conceptual question. Is the framework we use to understand the price of a commodity in a single market subject to the same critique as one might levy against the representative agent New Keynesian (RANK) model? The theory of demand and supply

The postwar social contract that promised economic security was inherently unstable. In this Levy Institute paper, I explain how Cory Doctorow NONCONSENSUAL BLUE TICK 's enshittification process applies to the labor market with devastating precision and how we might reverse engineer it. levyinstitute.org/wp-content/upl…

.Gauti Eggertsson 🇺🇦 and Jon Steinsson have responded to my critique of the New Keynesian (NK) model. Let me explain why we interpret the same facts differently. First: a digression into the philosophy of science. Most economists are aware of Karl Popper. In his book Conjectures

Great response. Among other things, these exchanges make me even more convinced that the profession lost something big when PhD programs stopped teaching economic thought. We accepted a tradeoff with technique and methods, and lost a comparative advantage.

This is incorrect. Economics is actually a subfield of political economy, contrary to what many people think. Many of those we consider today as the "classical economists" — such as Smith, Marx, and Ricardo — referred to their field of inquiry as political economy.
