(1/12) This year I did in-person author talks and presentations at 56 different schools ranging from Title I to college prep, elementary through high school. I talked to an incredibly diverse population of students with regards to race, religion, and economics.

We have been sounding the alarm about this for a long time. Some may want to go after the messenger, but we simply cannot make promises, hector people to vote, and then refuse to use our full power when they do. We still have time to fix this and act. But we need to be brave.

Well it's started. A kid who was an avid reader in 6th and 7th grade came to ask me for a particular genre of book around 200 pages. If we want kids to be readers, do not put restrictions of what they read for "independent reading". Independent reading should be their choice!

6th grade classes in the library for orientation brings me such joy! We created a reading life timeline of meaningful books in our life, shared what we're reading, and checked out books. Honoring what kids love to read makes such a difference. #SPSlibrarians #schoollibrarian

The other day I recommended The 57 Bus by Deirdre Slater to a student. Today I got the kindest note from their parent. This is why I love my job and why it breaks my heart when people try to ban books. #librarianlife #thankful
