This lock-in problem isn't as hard as it seems. It's just that you create competition for use cases instead of boxes. For example multi-cores instead of multi-purpose cores. You shift competition so that you can shift use cases between vendors, not change boxes.

Small innovations matter. The industry's response to spam calling has been a "one size fits all" solution that has led to an escalating war between networks and spammers. But users have different needs. We let operators and users choose the solution that fits them.
