I'm reminded of something I was struck by when I moved out East (and every year after during tourist season). "Midwestern nice" is a construction afforded people by sprawl, segregation and car culture meaning that you don't have to see or interact with anyone who isn't like you.

I'm so sick of hearing people my age and older dragging out tired old feel-good platitudes in response to structural problems in society that we clearly failed to adequately redress in our turn. We should be thankful that the next generation is pushing us to do better.
