Horror stories about people living in unsafe homes owned by MPs are possible because MPs have stripped protections from renters over the last 40 years and profited from that inequality.

Landlords are the 3rd-biggest group in parliament with 85 MPs, but the the number and proportion of landlord MPs is has fallen since 2017. However, Labour more than doubled their landlord MP numbers in 2024 and bucked the trend by increasing their landlord percentage.
