Our new paper in Arctic Science Journal by UBC Geography (also at @ubcgeography.bsky.social) and Universität Freiburg applies neural networks to model carbon fluxes between a polygon tundra and atmosphere: Warming climate reduces carbon uptake and longer growing seasons correlate with stronger methane emissions dx.doi.org/10.1139/AS-202…

The The European Campus #MobiLab roadshow vists @Freiburg this week. Can artificial intelligence inform and support cities in developing effective climate adaption strategies? We feature our project "I4C - Intelligence for Cities" Universität Freiburg on June 29 and 30 at Platz der alten Synagoge.

This week, a new eddy-covariance supersite has been installed in Paris by INRAE #LSCE Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry Uni Heidelberg and Universität Freiburg. In our ICOS RI Cities Horizon Europe 🇪🇺 project we develop new methods measuring and attributing greenhouse gas emission reductions in EU cities.

The #urbisphere annual partner meeting is taking place in #Paris at the #SIRTA Atmospheric Observatory. Discussions for the developments and future plans are ongoing! Nektarios Chrysoulakis Sue Grimmond @BlueSky Andreas Christen @BirkmannJoern #urbanization #climatechange #adaptation

Prof. Dr. Andreas Christen and Dr. William Morrison from Universität Freiburg presented Urbisphere research concerning #Berlin and #Paris at the 11th International Conference on Urban Climate 11th International Conference on Urban Climate Andreas Christen European Research Council (ERC) #cities #climate #h2020 #ERCSyG

Great honour to give a keynote talk at #Asiaflux2023. Thanks a lot for the invitation (met lots of great people!), also thanks my group members, collaborators, and especially my mentors (Andreas Christen, Markus Reichstein, Sara, Andy).

Excited to present “Climate-sensitive Urban Planning through Optimization of Tree Placements” w/ Ferdinand Briegel, Max Argus, Andreas Christen & @ThomasBrox at the #NeurIPS2023 Climate Change AI workshop. Tl;dr: we optimize urban tree locations for improved outdoor human thermal comfort.

2023 was the warmest year ever measured in the 46 year-long history of our ICOS RI forest research site Hartheim Universität Freiburg. 2023 was +1.6ºC over the long-term average. 3 out of last 4 years were warmer and drier, causing accelerated mortality of trees. meteo.uni-freiburg.de/en/infrastruct…

Our year-long Urbisphere campaign in Paris comes to an end. This week, the Universität Freiburg team launched parallel radiosoundings in city & suburbs. With Sue Grimmond @BlueSky RSlabGr Simone Kotthaus and @MPAHaeffelin we study how cities modify winter inversions that cause poor air quality.

Indoor climate change? Yes - not only outdoors but also indoors, heat increases and affects health & productivity. Our work Universität Freiburg published in Climatic Change Journal uses sensors & climate models to assess future heat stress at 100+ workplaces Urbisphere link.springer.com/article/10.100…

New paper in GeoModelDevelopment on our machine learning model developed Universität Freiburg for mapping heat stress in cities - faster & with comparable accuracy to physical models it enables multi-year simulations at 1m scale for entire cities Freiburg im Breisgau Urbisphere #I4C doi.org/10.5194/gmd-17…

Presenting today our European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant Urbisphere to Minister of Science, Research and Arts Petra Olschowski Wissenschaft.Kunst.BW as a best practice project for Horizon Europe 🇪🇺. We Universität Freiburg and Uni Stuttgart collaborate with European Partners to resolve cities in climate models.

Always great to see 1st day of data from a newly installed eddy covariance system! We just started operation of our new 45 m #ECOSENSE tower - measuring CO2 fluxes from a mixed forest in DFG public | @[email protected] CRC. Amazing effort by technicians, admins, students & researchers Universität Freiburg.

Our new preprint European Geosciences Union presents a modular approach to near-time data management for observation campaigns on weather and climate in cities - Developed @unifreiburg, Reading Meteorology and RSlabGr and deployed as part of Urbisphere in multiple cities. egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2024…

Can artificial intelligence assist climate adaptation in cities?
