The tracking industry is acutely aware that the affirmative consent requirement is an existential threat. That's why cookie consent dialogs are loaded with dark patterns. The study confirms that even simple design changes are highly effective. arxiv.org/pdf/1909.02638…

Privacy by Design fine: German real estate company fined €14 million for having an archive system which did not allow the removal of data. The company was fined for breach of Article 25(1) (DPbD) and Article 5 (possibly the storage limitation principle). datenschutz-berlin.de/fileadmin/user…

Important to name names. HireVue and Pymetrics are the top co's selling snake oil responsible for horror stories like these. Zero peer-reviewed evidence that this stuff predicts job performance. Millions of people screened out of jobs based on elaborate random number generators.

Facebook just banned fake/modified media content (images, videos). This includes a ban on deepfakes. Will be removed. That's about it because they can technically do it (might be simpler then the "end of truth" concerns voiced over last years). about.fb.com/news/2020/01/e…

These are the four most popular misconceptions people have about race & gender bias in algorithms. I'm wary of wading into this conversation again, but it's important to acknowledge the research that refutes each point, despite it feeling counter-intuitive. Let me clarify.👇🏾

Also just a reminder to those watching the rapid changes to checkmarks on Twitter: That new consent order requires Twitter to assess the privacy and security risks of any product changes or new features.

Consent, opt in or opt out, should never be part of any privacy law. It doesn’t work at scale, as Woodrow Hartzog, Daniel J. Solove, et al have said. Happy to play a small part in this Joseph Turow study. Thx Natasha Singer; excellent write up. nytimes.com/2023/02/07/tec… asc.upenn.edu/sites/default/…
