There’s blood on her hands again. It’s not hers. She doesn’t think it’s hers. She should be used to the sight by now.

She needs to do something. She’s just gonna go check the perimeters again.

He’s welcome to join. It’s safer that way, but she’s fine going alone.

It’s probably going to be an uneventful trip. She’s checked them three times already, and nothing’s there.

Then he’s more than welcome to come along. She understands. She’s been trapped in her own head all day.

His silent presence at her side is a comfort she didn’t know she needed. She’s not sure how, to be quite honest. It’s just everything catching up to her, she thinks.

She lets out a soft breath of laughter and bumps his shoulder in return. She’s just tired, of everything. There are days worse than others, and she fears today is one of them.

For what it’s worth, she thinks he’d be a great dad.

Stifles a yawn. Sleep isn’t her friend anymore.

Her body hurts, but she’s pretty sure it’s exhaustion.

She appreciates him for it. She knows that they’re surviving, day by day, but for what? What are they living for? It’s not like this is going to get any better. It’s just going to be easier to manage.

She has a whole thermos full if he wants to share.

If she wasn’t more concerned for her brother’s happiness than her own, she might let him. She pours him a cup and passes it to him.

Marriage is the last thing on her mind, but she appreciates his sentiment. She lifts her own cup to her lips, taking a sip and moving to lean heavily against his shoulder.

She stood on the edge of a cliff today, and she wondered what it would feel like to fall. She has moments like that sometimes.
