Paper alert 📢: Does earthquake rupture along a bimaterial fault always follow the theoretically preferred direction? Our recent observational work (led by Yoshida-san) using the S-net and on-land stations shows the otherwise. Neighborhood matters! authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S00…

Our recent experimental study shows slip coalescence is a viable mechanism that can promote earthquake nucleation and foreshock activity. Also, we find that foreshocks often lag behind the slow slip front. Please check the paper (OA) here in JGR-SE: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

Opinion: To argue for universal gravitation, Newton had to become a “geodesist.” Learn how Newton derived the shape of the Earth in this issue’s #TheBackPage: go.aps.org/3z0PtvY. #APSnews

Congratulations Binhao Wang for the publication of your first #PhD paper, investigating the effect of shear heating and temperature strengthening during seismic ruptures. doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl… USC Earth Science

The 2021 Mw 7.3 Madoi (or Maduo) China earthquake shows that immature faults are capable of hosting supershear ruptures, especially the so-called perturbation-type supershear ruptures. Please check our recent finding published in JGR-SE: doi.org/10.1029/2022JB…

Ding et al. simulate various scenarios to analyze a backward rupture branching during the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake, and show it can occur by both direct and indirect triggering depending on the fault's initial stress and friction conditions. Read 👉doi.org/10.26443/seism…

You've heard of the Pacific Ring of Fire. But you haven't heard of the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire! That's because we're defining it for the first time in our new blog post. We think these two features are distinct in important ways - check it out (link in my bio).

This study, once again, shows that geometrically complex fault section is capable of hosting transient supershear bursts.

A nice study showing "hidden" ruptures, or a mixture of ruptures and interface waves (doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl…), in the wake of a primary rupture. It also reminds us to pay attention to what we are measuring in the lab.

Analogous to linear algebra and finite frequency, there is an "eigenvector" in fault mechanics along which fault damage zone width can be minimized. Such effect can overtake fault maturity in controlling rupture behaviors. Liu‐Zeng et al. AGU Advances agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Good to read this work in conjunction with a recent anti-repeating EQ paper. Useful for class teaching about the who-drag-whom debate underlying plate tectonics.

A recent study shows that a prominent fault-interior asperity initially hosts microseismicity and casts a wide slip shadow, then impedes slow slip migration, and finally produces large co-seismic slip. Thus, asperity can show quite diverse behaviors. authors.elsevier.com/c/1i~RQ,Ig4Yx2a

Glad to share Xiaotian Ding 's work: observable back-propagating ruptures can be excited by a variety of perturbation mechanisms, and observations confirm their wide existence. Rewinding the Fault: Stress Perturbations Promote Back-Propagating Ruptures eos.org/editor-highlig…
