I’ve been told by Elizabeth Smith and Tyler Bell that the lidar truck can scan and get data anywhere, but I’m not sure this is exactly what they had in mind.

Returned from TORUS yesterday, bringing an end to a long stretch of field work (including PERiLS). Great storms and great work, but absolutely exhausting. Never doing field work again - until 6 months from now when I forget my exhaustion and sign on for PERiLS year 2.

Since long-range severe wx forecasting is all the rage right now, I figured I'd try my hand at it. The red circled region is where I expect a hot spot of severe wx to develop in late April. Please kindly ignore the second image. Nothing to see there.

There really needs to be a radar placed in Northern MO (Kirksville). Every one of the 4 closest WSR-88Ds has a beam height over 4 km in that area. Days like today are difficult enough without storms forming in/moving through areas with poor low-level coverage.

In case there is any doubt that severe wx is likely today...
