Paul Laurence Dunbar was born on June 27, 1872, in Dayton, Ohio, to formerly enslaved parents. His poem “Sympathy,” published in Lyrics of the Hearthside (1899), later inspired the title of Maya Angelou’s autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. #BlackHistoryMonth
