• 44 million birds lost • 25% of UK's mammals at risk of extinction • 97% of wild flower meadows gone As Britain celebrates 70 years of the Queen's reign, alex thomson explains how the country's wildlife has been damaged in that time - and if it can be reversed.

Quick visit to @Warnham_St_M church yesterday to admire the 'no mow' area in the northern part of the churchyard. Lots of wildflowers and buzzing with insects! Great to see.

I don't want a monarchy, or a republic: I want an Empire, with loads of Emperors and Empresses... I want this butterfly to be common, everywhere, in countryside & in town...

According to Dave Goulson in his book #silentearth one monthly flea treatment for a medium dog can kill 60 million honeybees. Scary. #honeybees #extinction #linocut #linoprint #printmaking #fleatreatment #saveourbees #insects

This rather smart Blue-bordered Carpet turned up in the #WildaboutWarnham garden last night. Instead of using my moth trap I tried the combination of a 125MV bulb and a white sheet which attracted a good range of species that were easy to pot up for identification!

More pug uncertainty... UK Moth Identification Sussex Moth Group is this a Grey Pug? Among other moths last night in the #WildaboutWarnham garden were, I think, Marbled White Spot, Mottled Beauty & perhaps Clepsis consimilana (Privet Twist) but v. happy to be put right on any of these, thanks!

So simple, but so important. Wildflowers can make all the difference for pollinating insects. And plants are the foundation for healthy ecosystems and food chains. Please give this message some Twitter support!

Growing Hedge Woundwort in my #WildAboutWarnham garden border. Some gardeners might not approve and it's definitely a bit invasive but I like it and so do these Woundwort Shieldbugs!

What the **** is the matter with you Oxfordshire County Council ? Are you as bad as Derbyshire Dales DC ? Or will you at least now admit this was a horrible mistake and pledge to make sure it never happens again ? There is no excuse - this is eco-vandalism pure and simple

Lots of moths in the #WildAboutWarnham trap last night despite moon. Most v. small & slightly uninspiring. Pick of the bunch: Great Oak Beauty, Eidophasia messingiella (Bitter-cress Smudge) - new to me + not sure, maybe Notocelia trimaculana (Triple-blotched Bell) UK Moth Identification

Taking a break from micro-moth ID, here are two of the larger moths that visited the #WildAboutWarnham moth trap last night! A stunning Privet Hawk-moth and a lovely Swallow-tail #MothsMatter

So important to survey and record Swift nests. "If we don't know where they are we can't protect them". Why not pop out around 8.45pm walk your street and if you see it log a Swift nest.
